He built the first commercial anti-virus software in 1987 and founded McAfee Associates to sell it.
In later years, McAfee became the company’s most outspoken opponent, asking customers to delete the company’s anti-virus software, which he described as bloatware. Smartphone apps, bitcoin, yoga, light-sport aircraft, and recreation were among his personal and professional interests.
McAfee was born on a U.S. Army installation (of the 596th Ordnance Ammunition Company) in Cinderford, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom, on 18 September 1945, to an American father, Don McAfee, who was stationed there, and a British mother, Joan McAfee (Williams).  McAfee’s father was from Roanoke, and he grew up mostly in Salem, Virginia.
